Under the capable leadership of the programs CEO/Director, Sharon Lee Myers, My venture is to address the unique needs of the children that are academically at risk. These children are between the ages of 5-12 and are in grades k-5. The purpose and content of my quest is geared toward describing how I plan to address the unique needs of the children that are in the Pittsburgh School District. I believe that high quality after school programs for all children will provide an engaging and enriching environment which will lead to an improved academic environment. Statistics show that such an environment reduces truancy, teen pregnancy and juvenile crime. I also believes that after school programs are the key to the success of the Pittsburgh community because they provide important academic support, enrichment activities and a safe environment for our children during the crucial after school hours.

Today’s society is in need of strong effective servant leaders and traditional leadership skills are not enough.  I believe that my background as an educational leader is just a prelude to my present interest in the development of the Children of Promise After School Program. My love of children and what I do has sustained me and provides enthusiasm and the necessary impetus to drive me toward a multitude of pursuits and accomplishments.  The exploration of my professional knowledge stems directly from my lifelong work as an educator.  From my teaching experiences, the question of the relationship between the kinds of competence valued in my professional practice has emerged for me not only as an intellectual puzzle but as the object of a personal quest.  When the doors of opportunity opened for me to pursue my destiny and to see those desires unfold I launched into the beginning of my studies at the University of Pittsburgh. Today I continue to pursue my professional development in the field of education as a lifelong learner.

I became interested in after school programs during my graduate studies at the University of Pittsburgh while doing research on the academic achievement of African American students. During this time I was also an instructor at the Pittsburgh Job Corps Center. To my amazement there were a large number of young men and women between the ages of 16-24 that were reading on a 3rd or 4th level and barely able to add or subtract. I was appalled at how these students were able to slip through the cracks in our school system. Well it was out of this dilemma that the Children of Promise After School Program was birthed and they would no longer be perceived as (children at risk.) but "Children of Promise".  During my studies at the University of Pittsburgh my pursuit of a Reading Specialist/M.S. of Education degree became my course of study.  Through my research I discovered how those children would have benefited from a well-structured reading and math program during their elementary school years. Therefore, my goal was to become equipped so that I could improve the quality of after school programs and provide the necessary tools that would assure the academic success of every child That I encountered.  By becoming knowledgeable about research based strategies that underlie effective instruction and being able to identify the most effective reading approaches, programs and methods of accessing our children, I set out to address their academic needs,

My Mantra is: We must do the things today what others won’t do in order for our children to have the things tomorrow that others won’t have.

“Therefore, Quitting is not an Option”.
